I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “All good things must come to an end.” And, in fact, it’s almost true.
So many good things have a time limit. The Phillies’ playoff run last fall came to an end. The Eagles’ postseason ran its course. From ball games to the college experience, from birthday parties to summer vacation, from family road trips to the years of youthful vigor: before you know it, time’s up.
Can you think of a single good thing that’s not on the clock? We’ve had some stellar spring days lately—yet “this too shall pass.” The daffodils came and went. Of course, the azaleas are on the way, and then the rhododendrons—but only for a time.
Still, maybe you’re thinking, “What about the cycle of seasons, the way spring keeps making its appearance year after year, isn’t that perpetual?” Fair enough—if you mean from the planet’s perspective: earth orbits sun, again and again, “world without end.” But the human experience of recurring seasons is not endless.
4,000 weeks—someone wrote a book to say that’s how long you have IF you live to old age. Picture 4,000 check-boxes on a chart: time’s running out. “All good things must come to an end.”
Or, actually, almost all good things. One good thing will not come to an end: life with Jesus. Eternal life, when there will be no more tears, no more sadness, no more being afraid, no more sickness, no more danger, no more dying … and most of all: when we’ll get to be with Jesus—the one who knows and loves us best of all. Best Friend ever! Best Leader ever! Eternal life with Jesus is the best thing ever—and it definitely will NOT come to an end!
The resurrection of Jesus dethroned and defeated death, and it opened the door to a future life beyond this time-bound, fleeting world—the life you were made for! So, friends, don’t watch the clock: fix your eyes on Jesus. Put your trust in him, and live!
