In these days of information overload and instant access to every kind of media message, with so many voices clamoring for attention, and amidst all the fear and rage, followers of Jesus need to keep their focus:  Fix your eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2).  The soul is not equipped for multitasking.

Missionary doctor Helen Roseveare calls believers to a life of FOCUS--rivet your attention on "one thing":

What to know:

  • "One thing I do know, that though I was blind, now I see" (John 9:25).  It's Jesus who transforms our lives.

What is necessary:

  • "Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, ‘Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her’" (Luke 10:38-42).

What to do:

  • "Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 3:13-14)

What to ask for:

  • "One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple" (Psalm 27:4)

We may have a hundred "good" things we're trying to do and learn and change and make and fix and deal with, but the good can become an enemy of the best.  And God wants the very best for you.  Let your life be about "one thing."  For your own good, for the honor of Christ, and for the sake of your witness to a weary world:  Fix your eyes on Jesus!
