Today we begin a sermon series that asks, “What do we believe?”  Or put it this way:  “In this day of slanted stories, polarized politics, fake news, and ‘true for you but not for me,’ how can we make sure we really know where we stand when it comes to our essential message?”  Or this way:  “Where do we put down anchor in today’s raging sea of deception and spin and incessant online blabbering?”

Let me ask the question by quoting Scripture:  How do we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes (Eph 4:13-14)?  How can we navigate amidst today’s gale force secular winds and the wild waves of competing ideologies and worldviews?  It’s a challenge!

Of course, if you’re just going through religious motions and all this church-and-faith stuff is, to you, basically a side show in a life focused on yourself and the here-and-now, talk of zealous Christ-following will sound, well, a little “extreme.”  But for the genuine Christian and any Bible-based, Christ-centered church, grasping the foundational facts is crucial—it’s how we live.  So here’s the plan, Lord willing, for an eight-week series on “Walking in the Truth”:

Sept. 2

The Word of God (2 Tim 3:14-17)

Sept. 9

The Triune God (2 Cor 13:14)

Sept. 16

The Human Condition (Gen 1-3)

Sept. 23

The Plan of Redemption (Rom 3:9-26)

Sept. 30

The Church Community (Eph 4:1-16)

Oct. 7

Church on Mission (Mt 28:16-20)

Oct. 14

Church and State (1 Cor 12:12-31)

Oct. 21

Our Great Hope (Rev 21-22)

I encourage you to read ahead—study and pray over the coming Sunday’s sermon text.  In addition, review our Statement of Faith (you can access it from this page).  And ask the Lord to impress upon your mind and heart what a WONDER is the newsflash from heaven that he’s revealed and we affirm!
